The Massachusetts Envirothon has been educating young people about the environment for over 30 years.

When the Envirothon program started in 1979 in Pennsylvania it was known as the Environmental Olympics. In 1988 the name was changed to the Envirothon.

That same year, the first Massachusetts Envirothon was held. Five teams participated in the competition at Buck Hill Conservation Land in Spencer, Mass.

The first three Massachusetts Envirothons did not include Current Issue presentations. The Current Issue component was introduced in 1991.
